Wandering Merchants and Trade

Trading with wandering merchants is one of four confirmed purposes of expeditions in Pax Autocratica. What is known, and what has not been announced.

Wandering merchants are the one confirmed part of Pax Autocratica where you deal with outsiders as something other than targets or raw material. In a game about conquest, conscription and prisoner conversion, that stands out.

Can you trade in Pax Autocratica? Yes — it is explicitly one of the four reasons to leave your colony.

Multiverse names exactly four things you venture into the shattered reaches of the Tyris System to do:

Purpose What it feeds
Harvest resources Colony production
Conscript new citizens Population and labour
Trade with wandering merchants This page
Fuel your colony’s expansion Growth overall

Three of those four are extraction. Trade is the exception — a voluntary exchange in a game otherwise built on taking.

Where Do You Find Merchants in Pax Autocratica?

Section titled “Where Do You Find Merchants in Pax Autocratica?”

They are described as wandering, encountered out in the Tyris System rather than at a fixed location. No permanent trading post, hub settlement or merchant faction has been announced.

The word choice suggests encounters rather than destinations — you find them on expeditions, they are not somewhere you go on purpose. But Multiverse has not confirmed whether they appear randomly, on a schedule, in specific sector types, or gated behind progression, so treat that as reading rather than fact.

Also unpublished: whether merchants are hostile if provoked, whether they can be robbed or captured as prisoners, whether reputation exists, and whether they can refuse to deal with you.

What Can You Buy From Merchants in Pax Autocratica?

Section titled “What Can You Buy From Merchants in Pax Autocratica?”

Not announced by Multiverse.

There is no published list of goods, prices, stock rotation, currency, or interface. Is there a currency in Pax Autocratica? Also not announced — Multiverse has not stated whether trade runs on money, on barter with colony resources, or on something else.

Given that your colony manufactures weapons, armour, food and supplies through assigned labour, a barter economy against your own production would be structurally coherent. That is a reasonable expectation and nothing more. This wiki does not print expectations as mechanics.

Expeditions are how the colony grows, and everything you bring home has a cost attached somewhere else.

Resources are harvested under fire. New citizens are conscripted, which means the population you are managing under fear or comfort partly consists of people taken by force — and discontent accumulates until dissent becomes revolt.

Trade is the one supply line that does not add to that pressure. Whether the game prices it accordingly — making commerce a genuinely competitive alternative to conquest, or a token gesture — is one of the more interesting open questions going into Early Access on August 10.

Expeditions into Elysia, the first Sector, are part of the free Prologue, available on Steam since December 2025 at no cost. If merchants appear there, they appear in a version anyone can test today.

Worth noting while you play: how often merchants actually turn up, what they accept, and whether trading is ever the better choice over simply taking what you need.

Standard caveats apply — Prologue scale is smaller, mechs and deeper automation are absent, and balance may change before Early Access. See Prologue vs Early Access.
