Pax Autocratica Tutorial and UI

The tutorial and UI draw sharp criticism in Pax Autocratica reviews - and Multiverse has now admitted it. What 45 reviewers said, and what is patched.

The tutorial and the interface are among the most criticised parts of Pax Autocratica — and Multiverse now agrees. On August 13, 2026 the developer named unclear guidance as one of four high-priority problems it has accepted, in its own words. This page sets out what reviewers said, with counts, what Multiverse has admitted, and what it has already patched.

Figures come from 2,255 Steam reviews sampled August 19, 2026. Nobody on this site has played the game.

Across all eight topics that cleared this wiki’s three-mention threshold, the tutorial and UI has the highest share of negative reviews:

Topic Mentions From negative reviews Negative share
UI and tutorial 18 6 33%
Amount of content 44 6 14%
Difficulty and balance 16 2 13%
Bugs and softlocks 41 4 10%
Crashes 10 2 20%
Performance 22 1 5%

Bugs get mentioned more often, but overwhelmingly inside positive reviews. The tutorial is the one area where a third of the people who bring it up did not recommend the game. That makes it the most genuine soft spot in the reception.

Is the Pax Autocratica tutorial good?

Reviews are split, and Multiverse has taken the critics side. Of 2,255 reviews sampled on August 19, 2026, 45 discuss the tutorial or interface and 9 of those come from negative reviews - a 20 percent negative share, down from 33 percent a week earlier. Some reviewers call the tutorial easy to follow with no large learning curve; others call it long, dry, or say the game throws you in without much explanation. On August 13 Multiverse listed unclear mechanics, interfaces and objectives among its high-priority problems.

This stopped being a matter of opinion on August 13, 2026. In an announcement setting out the priorities it had accepted from player feedback, Multiverse wrote:

“Guidance and clarity still need improvement. Some mechanics, interfaces, and objectives are still not explained clearly (high priority - WIP)”

That is one of four problems the developer flagged as high priority, alongside capture depth, repetitive expeditions and soldier combat behaviour. It matters here for a practical reason: if the tutorial confused you, that is a known defect being worked on, not something you failed to understand.

Work has already shipped against it. The August 12 patch improved objective guidance in several battles, improved loading and performance in the tutorial battle, and raised early-game quest rewards; the August 15 patch added interaction sound effects to the final room of the tutorial battle and fixed text overlap in the Soldier Deployment bar at 16:10 resolutions. The negative share on this topic fell from 33 percent to 20 percent across the same week, which is consistent with those changes landing, though a week of reviews does not prove causation. The split is not random — it tracks what you have played before.

Reviewers coming from shooters report an easy ramp. One wrote that “the learning curve isn’t bad either — if you are familiar with first person shooters you’ll be” fine. Another: “the tutorial is easy to understand so there’s not a large learning curve.”

Reviewers focused on the colony layer report the opposite. A German-language review describes the interface as initially overloaded, and says the game throws you in without much explanation. One reviewer finished the tutorial and was still stuck on a basic follow-up task, writing that they were “having some trouble figuring out how to make additional ships now that the tutorial has ended.”

That gap is the practical takeaway: the tutorial teaches you to shoot better than it teaches you to run a colony. If you came for the base building, expect to work some of it out yourself.

How long is the Pax Autocratica tutorial?

Multiverse has not published a length. Reviewers describe it as long, with one calling it quite long and another describing a dry combat tutorial fought alongside AI allies. It ends with a large-scale battle. Several reviewers wrote their reviews immediately after finishing it, at between 1.7 and 3 hours played.

That last detail is the most concrete estimate available. Multiple reviewers with 1.7 to 3 hours logged describe having just completed the tutorial and a first expedition, which puts the onboarding somewhere inside the first couple of hours rather than the first twenty minutes.

One reviewer’s summary of its shape: the base gets attacked, you are told to prove your loyalty, and then comes a combat tutorial fought with AI allies — which they found dry. Another, in Portuguese, singled out the end of the tutorial for praise: a breathless, frantic battle that did not drop a frame.

Opinion divides here too, and the divide is about taste rather than function. Nobody reports the UI being broken.

The criticism is that it feels dated. One reviewer, otherwise strongly positive, called it “UI straight from 2012 with the card images and its interface in general.” A negative review described it as “simple and largely in your face.” The German review’s word was overloaded.

The defence comes from a reviewer who grouped it with the game’s strengths: “the theme/voice acting/UI are all well-crafted.”

One concrete, non-aesthetic issue: English subtitle errors. A reviewer with 14 hours logged wrote that “some of the English subtitles are filled with clear mistakes.” Given the game ships with full English voice acting, this is a localisation quality issue rather than a translation gap. Is there a known bug in the Pax Autocratica tutorial?

Yes, and Multiverse documented it itself. A July 28, 2026 update recorded a softlock in the Space Resources mission that occurs when tutorial steps are completed out of order. Multiverse’s stated workaround is to restart the expedition. A later patch on August 11, 2026 fixed building models displaying incorrectly during the final phase of the tutorial battle.

This is worth knowing before you start, because the trigger is behavioural rather than random: doing tutorial steps out of the intended order. If you are the kind of player who wanders off to explore mid-instruction, follow the prompts in order through the Space Resources mission specifically.

Note the caveat this wiki always attaches: that softlock was documented against the Prologue build in July. Whether it persists in the Early Access release has not been stated. See crash and bug fixes.

Date Change
August 11, 2026 Fixed building models displaying incorrectly during the final phase of the tutorial battle
August 2, 2026 Added a new tutorial cutscene
July 28, 2026 Documented the Space Resources softlock and its workaround

Two tutorial-related changes in the ten days around launch says Multiverse is actively working on this area. Nothing on the Early Access roadmap addresses the tutorial or UI directly, so improvements are likely to arrive as patches rather than as a listed feature.

The free Prologue contains the same opening. It has been on Steam since December 2025, costs nothing, and includes the tutorial and the first sector — so you can find out whether the onboarding works for you before paying anything.
