Pax Autocratica Difficulty Levels
Pax Autocratica difficulty levels: Relaxed, Lenient, Standard, Demanding and Punishing are all named in official patch notes, with reward and scaling facts.
Pax Autocratica has adjustable difficulty as a confirmed Steam store feature, and — unusually for an unreleased game — the actual difficulty names are documented, because Multiverse’s official Prologue patch notes keep referring to them by name.
Everything on this page comes from those official announcements. No difficulty modifier percentages have ever been published, and none are invented here.
The Five Confirmed Difficulty Names
Section titled “The Five Confirmed Difficulty Names”Across the official demo update announcements, five difficulty levels have been named:
| Difficulty | Named in official patch notes |
|---|---|
| Relaxed | June 26 and July 22, 2026 |
| Lenient | June 26, 2026 |
| Standard | June 26 and July 22, 2026 |
| Demanding | July 22 and August 2, 2026 |
| Punishing | August 2, 2026 |
Reading the names in order — Relaxed, Lenient, Standard, Demanding, Punishing — gives a natural five-step ladder from easiest to hardest, and the patch history supports that ordering: the easier tiers get eased further while Punishing gets harder.
One honest caveat: Multiverse has never published a complete difficulty list in one place. These five names are assembled from separate patch notes, so the list may not be exhaustive.
Higher Difficulty, Better Drops — Officially
Section titled “Higher Difficulty, Better Drops — Officially”This is the most useful confirmed fact on the page. The July 22, 2026 patch notes state directly:
- “Adjusted difficulty-based rewards. Higher difficulties now provide more generous drop rewards.”
- The difficulty selection interface was improved so that “icons now show reward differences more clearly.”
So difficulty in Pax Autocratica is a risk-reward dial, not just a challenge setting. The August 2 update continued tuning this, adjusting the drop rates of ammunition, Super Potions and Healing Grenades across difficulty levels.
How the Balance Has Moved
Section titled “How the Balance Has Moved”The patch history shows a consistent direction — widen the gap between the easy and hard ends:
- June 26 — stat modifier values adjusted for Relaxed, Lenient and Standard.
- July 1 — difficulty selection buttons redesigned; abnormal drop rate behaviour across difficulties fixed.
- July 22 — Relaxed and Standard made easier; Demanding made slightly harder.
- August 2 — enemy attack bonus reduced on Demanding and increased on Punishing.
What Players Say About the Difficulty
Section titled “What Players Say About the Difficulty”Aggregate figures from 2,255 Steam reviews sampled August 19, 2026, nine days after the Early Access launch. Nobody on this site has played the game; these are counted community reports, and the count is stated so you can weigh them.
64 reviews discuss difficulty or balance, and only 7 of those come from negative reviews. For a game with a five-rung difficulty ladder and a roguelite structure, an 11 percent negative share is a mild reception — difficulty is not a widespread complaint, and the proportion has barely moved as the sample grew from 683 reviews to 2,255.
The specific criticisms that do appear cluster on one theme: that outcomes are decided by gear rather than by play. One reviewer put it as battles being “merely a question of how much” you out-equip the enemy; another described some of the challenge as feeling like “artificial difficulty” rather than designed difficulty. Set against that, other reviewers describe combat as challenging even when you feel powerful, and one specifically praised having “a lot of different difficulty settings to fine tune for your preferred combat difficulty.”
Both readings appear often enough that neither is the consensus. What can be said is that the difficulty ladder itself — the ability to pick your rung — is the part reviewers mention approvingly.
One structural detail from reviews that is worth knowing before you pick a rung: several describe a difficulty counter that ramps the longer you spend travelling in the universe, separate from the difficulty setting you chose. Multiverse has published nothing about such a system, so treat it as a community report rather than a confirmed mechanic.
What Is Not Announced
Section titled “What Is Not Announced”The usual guide-site blanks, none of which have official answers:
- Exact modifier values for any difficulty — damage taken, enemy health, drop percentages
- Whether difficulty can be changed mid-save or mid-expedition
- Whether any content or reward is exclusive to a difficulty
- Whether achievements (themselves not announced) will be difficulty-gated
- Whether the Early Access build on August 10 will ship with this same difficulty ladder
That last one matters: these names come from Prologue patch notes, and Multiverse states Prologue content and balance may change before the Early Access release.
Try the Ladder Yourself
Section titled “Try the Ladder Yourself”The difficulty system is live right now in the free Prologue, where the balance changes above actually shipped. If you want to know what Punishing feels like before spending $29.99 on launch day, that is the honest way to find out.

Difficulty FAQ
Section titled “Difficulty FAQ”How many difficulty levels does Pax Autocratica have?
Five difficulty names are confirmed in official patch notes: Relaxed, Lenient, Standard, Demanding and Punishing. Multiverse has never published a complete list, so this may not be all of them.
What is the hardest difficulty in Pax Autocratica?
Punishing is the hardest difficulty named so far. The August 2, 2026 patch increased the enemy attack bonus on Punishing while reducing it on Demanding. No exact modifiers have been published.
Do higher difficulties give better rewards in Pax Autocratica?
Yes. The July 22, 2026 patch notes state that higher difficulties provide more generous drop rewards, and that the difficulty selection icons now show reward differences more clearly.

Adjustable difficulty is a confirmed Steam store feature for both the full game and the free Prologue. Whether it can be changed mid-save has not been published.
